Fermo is an atmospheric medieval town situated 319 meters above sea level, surrounded by green rolling hills. From the Piazzale del Girfalco, at the top of the hill, you can enjoy stunning views over the surrounding valleys and, on clear days, even as far as the Adriatic coast. In this park stands the impressive Duomo di Fermo (Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta), a beautiful church that is free to visit, where you can also admire the historical richness inside during your walk.
The beating heart of the town is Piazza del Popolo, a large and elegant square surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and shops. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee or aperitivo while watching Italian daily life unfold. From the square, narrow streets lead to quiet corners and hidden squares, ideal for leisurely exploring the town.
A special attraction is the Cisterne Romane, impressive underground water reservoirs from Roman times that show the advanced engineering skills of the past. Tickets are available at the tourist information office (IAT) at the square.
Fermo also has a charming market tradition. The weekly market is a great place to discover local products and regional delicacies. In summer, an antique market is held on Thursday evenings, adding an extra atmospheric touch to the center. Current days and times can be found on our Shopping page.
There is also plenty to enjoy gastronomically. In local trattorias, you can taste regional specialties, from fresh pasta and meat dishes to fish from the Adriatic Sea. Combine a summer visit to Fermo with the Thursday evening antique market and reserve a table at L’Enoteca Bar e Vino on Piazza del Popolo – guaranteed to be a delightful and enjoyable evening!
